Looking for a video doorbell without a subscription? Many popular models only save recordings if you pay a monthly cloud plan. Without one, a Ring doorbell still sends alerts and lets you watch live and talk to visitors, but it can’t save video for you to play back later. Ring devices have no local storage.

The doorbells below record locally, to built-in storage or a microSD card, so you can review every visitor and delivery with no monthly fee. Cloud plans are optional extras.

Quick answer: pick the eufy E340 if packages are stolen from your porch, because its second camera looks down at the doorstep. If your home already has doorbell wiring, get the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi. Pick the Tapo D235 if you want a large microSD card and the choice of battery or wired power.

These picks are based on manufacturer specifications and owner feedback, not our own testing. Specs below come from each brand.

The picks

Best for package theft

eufy Security Video Doorbell E340

The E340’s downward-facing second camera is its big selling point: you can see a parcel on the doormat that a single camera would miss. Recordings stay on the doorbell, and you can expand storage with an optional eufy HomeBase such as the S380.

  • Pro: Two cameras: one for visitors, one aimed at packages on the ground
  • Pro: 8 GB of built-in storage, no monthly fee
  • Pro: Battery or wired installation
  • Con: Built-in storage is modest; add a eufy HomeBase for more
Most storage for the money

Tapo D235 Video Doorbell

TP-Link’s Tapo doorbells are built around free local storage. With a large microSD card you can keep weeks of clips, and when it’s hardwired it can record continuously instead of only on motion.

  • Pro: Records to a microSD card up to 512 GB
  • Pro: Sharp 2K 5MP video with a 180° view
  • Pro: Battery or wired; continuous recording when wired
  • Con: microSD card sold separately
  • Con: Cloud backup needs the optional Tapo Care plan

Video doorbells with local storage: your options

“Local storage” means recordings are saved at your home instead of on the maker’s cloud servers, so there’s no monthly fee to keep them. There are four ways doorbells do it:

Storage type How it works Examples here
Built-in storage Memory inside the doorbell; nothing extra to buy eufy E340 (8 GB)
microSD card You add a card; bigger card, longer history Tapo D235 (up to 512 GB), Reolink doorbells
Home hub / base station A box indoors stores clips from the doorbell and other cameras eufy HomeBase (optional), Reolink Home Hub
NVR or NAS Wired doorbells record to a network video recorder you already run Reolink PoE models

Which is best? A microSD doorbell gives the most storage for the least money. A hub is worth it if you’ll add more cameras later, since one box stores everything. Whichever you pick, use a “high endurance” card made for continuous video, and check the largest card the doorbell supports.

One trade-off to know: if a thief takes a doorbell with built-in or microSD storage, the recordings go with it. A hub or NVR inside the house avoids that, and so does an optional cloud plan.

  • Ring: without a Ring Home plan you get motion and doorbell alerts, live view and two-way talk, but no recorded video history. Ring devices have no SD card slot.
  • Blink: Blink doorbells can save clips locally if you add a Sync Module 2 with a USB flash drive. That’s a one-time purchase instead of a subscription.

If you already use Ring cameras elsewhere, a plan may still be worth it. If not, a local-storage doorbell avoids the ongoing cost.

Worried about porch pirates over the holidays? A camera mostly records thefts, so pair it with the delivery options in our guide to how to stop package theft.

How to choose a video doorbell without a subscription

  • Wired or battery? Wired doorbells never need charging and some can record continuously. Battery models suit renters and homes without doorbell wiring. Renting? See our video doorbell for an apartment with no drilling guide.
  • Storage: microSD-based doorbells need a card. Some wired models (such as Reolink’s PoE doorbell) can also record to a network video recorder (NVR) or NAS if you already run security cameras. Choose a “high endurance” card made for security cameras, and check the maximum size the doorbell supports.
  • Field of view: a tall (4:3 or square) view shows visitors head to toe and packages at their feet. A dual-camera design like the eufy E340 goes further.
  • Smart home: most of these work with Alexa or Google Assistant for live view on smart displays. Check the listing for your ecosystem before you buy.
  • Wi-Fi at the door: doorbells sit at the edge of your home. If the signal is weak there, add a mesh Wi-Fi point or extender near the door, or pick a dual-band model.

FAQ

Is there a video doorbell with no monthly fee?

Yes. eufy, Reolink and Tapo doorbells save video locally with no subscription. Their cloud plans are optional.

Does Ring work without a subscription?

Partly. You get alerts, live view and two-way talk, but Ring can’t save recordings without a Ring Home plan.

Is local storage secure?

Local storage keeps your video in your home rather than on a company’s servers. The trade-off is that a thief who steals the doorbell itself could take the recordings, which is why some people pair it with a base station kept indoors.

A no-subscription doorbell also makes a practical gift for new homeowners – see our holiday gift guide and more home security guides. Decorating outside this season? Our pick of outdoor smart plugs for Christmas lights puts your display on a sunset schedule.
